The Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education welcomed a new District 4 representative to the board before the board’s training session on Monday afternoon.

Doug Knight was sworn in as a newly elected member of board. He defeated incumbent Chuck Gallyon in the November election.

Knight was joined by his son Caleb and daughter Anna Grace.

District 6 representative Charles Kelly, who beginning his 16th year in office, District 2 representative Bill Howell, who is beginning his second term, were also sworn in. Both men were unopposed in the November election.

Register of Deeds Ron Wyatt presided over the swearing-in ceremony as the three elected officials took their oath to office. Board members held a professional development training session with attorney Dean Shatley with Campbell Shatley, PLLC.

During the 6 p.m. meeting, Iredell County Superior Court Judge Joseph Crosswhite formally administered the oaths of office to the board members.

Knight, Kelly and Howell all raised their right hand and promised on the Bible to “faithfully support and maintain” local, state and federal laws. They also promised to “faithfully discharge the duties of office” as a member of the Iredell-Statesville Board of Education to the best of their abilities and knowledge.

Howell was joined by his wife Deborah during the ceremony and his family.

The board did not elect a new chair or vice chairman during the meeting, but will at a later time. Gallyon had served as vice chair.
