The Statesville City Council approved a second reading of annexation and rezoning requests to build a 60-unit senior housing development on Vance PO Road during its meeting on Monday night.
Before the 5-4 votes, in which Mayor Costi Kutteh provided the tie-breaking vote both times, several residents spoke against the development, saying that it would increase traffic and lower property values.
Kutteh was joined in voting for the requests by Council members Amy Lawton, William Morgan, Doris Allison and Frederick Foster.
The property would be developed in one phase, and would be for residents ages 55 and above. The site is just south of the intersection of Vance PO Road and Mocksville Highway just east of the Mocksville Highway and Broad Street intersection.
Council members John Stafford, Steve Johnson, Jap Johnson and David Jones cast votes in opposition.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business the council:
♦ Approved a resolution to affix the terms, conditions, and rate for the interfund loan from the Electric Fund to the Airport Fund.
♦ Funded water and sewer relocations and betterments associated with the NC Department of Transportation I-40/I-77 Interchange project (I-3819B) and approving Budget Amendment #23.
♦ Appointed one new member and re-appointed four current members to the Stormwater Advisory Commission – Daniel Pope, Mary Katherine Harbin, Steve Knight, Joe Hudson and David Reese.
♦ Reappointed two regular members to the Design Review Committee – Chuck Goode and Bryan George.
♦ Approved two appointments to the Statesville Regional Airport Commission – Dr. Robert Saltzman and David Alexander.
Well, the names are plain to see as to who to campaign against next election and I for one will do everything I can to see that all 5 lose their cushy little positions!
New strategic leadership is warranted, to guide our city forward in the right direction (to realize the vision for the future), Transparency, creativity, Innovation and inclusiveness of all city residents. Let’s consider …
Mayor Kutteh only sees tax dollars coming into the city and does not care at all about the residents who are impacted by these developments. He lives in his home downtown where he is not affected by any of this. Time for him to go.
