An Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputy saved the life of a North Iredell Middle School student last week.
On Thursday, April 7, Deputy Alan Josey, who works as the school resource officer at North Iredell Middle, was alerted to an emergency situation in the seventh-grade hallway at 11:28 a.m., according to an ICSO news release.
When Deputy Josey arrived in the area, he quickly evaluated the situation and discovered a young lady lying on the floor, exhibiting signs of respiratory distress, Sheriff Darren Campbell said. Another student was attempting to his classmate.
The deputy acted quickly and determined the student was choking before performing the lifesaving Heimlich maneuver and dislodging a piece of candy from her airway, according to the news release.
“Deputy Josey’s quick actions certainly abated a tragedy and allowed a young girl the opportunity to return home to her family,” the sheriff said. “We are beyond fortunate that Deputy Josey chose a career in law enforcement after serving eight years in the United States Army Reserve as a Combat Medic.”
Hopefully, Deputy Josey’s actions will inspire more to take Basic Life Support (BLS) class, which includes the Heimlich maneuver. Well done, sir.
