A Georgia man faces felony weapons charges after being stopped by Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies for a traffic violation on Interstate 77.

Joseph Olley

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Joseph Jamar Olley, 36, of Stockbridge, Ga., in a news release Wednesday.

Depute assigned to the ICSO Interstate Criminal Enforcement Team stopped a southbound vehicle driven by Olley on Monday, November 21, near near mile marker 59, Campbell said.

When deputies approached the vehicle, they detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to the news release.

After Olley admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle, the ICE Team conducted a search of the vehicle and found two handguns in the spare tire area in the trunk, Campbell said.

Olley told deputies that he was traveling from Syracuse, N.Y., to Atlanta, Ga., and had purchased two stolen handguns along the way, according to the news release.

The first handgun was a Taurus 9mm, which was reported stolen in Cherokee County, Ga., and the second handgun was a Kel-Tec 22 equipped with a silencer that was reported stolen from a UPS Shipping Facility, according to the news release. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is investigating that theft.

Olley was arrested and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was charged with three counts of Felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felony Manufacture or Possess a Weapon of Mass Death or Destruction, and two misdemeanor drug offenses.

Magistrate Nethkan issued a $500,000 secured bond on those charges.

According to the ICSO, Olley’s criminal history includes two counts of Felony Aggravated Assault, four counts of Felony Robbery, Felony Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Felony Possession of a Firearm or Knife During Commission of or Attempt to Commit Certain Felonies, Felony Forgery First-Degree, Felony Forgery Second-Degree, Misdemeanor Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor Giving False Name, Address, or Birthdate to Law Enforcement, and two counts of Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
