Mr. Joseph Barnes, 95, was born in Chester County, S.C., on February 28, 1925, and was the son of the late Joseph F. Barnes and the Late Carrie Meeks Barnes. He departed this life on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C., following an extended illness.

He was married to Betty Sue Tate Barnes, who survives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline James Barnes; a grandchild, Sandra Coleman; three sisters, Robbie Barnes, Maggie Barnes and Juanita Simpkins; and four brothers, Robert Barnes, Adam Barnes, Pertell Barnes and James Lee Jones.

He attended the Chester County Schools in South Carolina and was a member of Paradise AME Zion Church in Great Falls, S.C., and later moved his membership to Cedar Creek AME Zion Church in Lancaster, S.C. He was employed by Duke Power.

He leaves to cherish the memory of his life, in addition to his wife Betty Tate Barnes of the home, his children, Lawrence Edward Barnes of Charlotte, Jacques Andre Barnes (Loraine) of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tobias Wilson of Great Falls, S.C., Paulette Ashe of Charlotte, Joanne Rogers (Ronnie) of Greensboro, Magejeanette Lewis of Charlotte, Jessica Tate (Orlando) Williams of Washington, D.C., Jennifer Tate Brown (William Orlando) of Winder, Ga., and Crystal Jami Tate of Washington, D.C.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Grace Dean Tate of Statesville, Lawson Garrison of East Spencer, Annie Bell Barnes of Florida, Franklin (Jeanette) James of New Jersey and Johnnie Mae (Marcellious) Robinson of New Jersey; and a host of grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Friday, November 19, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 2:30 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times.
