Prescription drugs are a great help to many if used as prescribed.

Unfortunately, the CDC estimates more than 1.5 million emergency room visits each year are caused by adverse drug effects (ADEs).

Randi Raynor

Randi Raynor, Iredell Health Director of Pharmacy Services, discusses how to prevent ADEs.

“Drug interactions can be minimized by being forthright with your pharmacist and provider regarding all medications and supplements you are taking,” Raynor explained. “Patients should be counseled on any adverse reactions they may experience and be aware of what to look out for when taking a new medication.”

Prescription safety has come a long way as new technologies are introduced to ensure safe dispensing.

“Software in the outpatient setting now allows for quicker screening for drug interactions and potential ADEs,” said Raynor.

Tips for safely using prescription medications

The following can help reduce ADEs:

• Ask your pharmacist and provider questions if you don’t understand something about your prescription medication.
• Inform your provider of current medications and supplements.
• Read your medication labels and use the medication as directed.
• Do not use prescription medications that are not prescribed to you.
• Keep medications stored in a safe place away from children and pets.
• Dispose of unused prescription drugs following the guidelines set forth by the FDA.
