Salvatore J. Iglio of Troutman, N.C., passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 4, 2025, at the age of 83. He was a first-generation American and the second son of Angelo and Anna (Sorrentino) Iglio.
He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the area of Rockaway and Dean. Big Sal, as he was known to his friends and family, graduated from NYIT and worked as a mechanical draftsman.
He was a devoted Catholic and member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Brooklyn, N.Y., Blessed Sacrament in Valley Stream, N.Y., St. Hugh of Lincoln in Huntington, N.Y., and St. Therese in Mooresville, N.C.
He married the love of his life, JoAnn Marie Brennan, at Our Lady of Lords Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1962 and had two children.
Big Sal loved fishing and shared that passion with his son, Sal Jr. Together, they went on many charter fishing trips in their quest for the next big catch. He was a member of the Long Island Woodworkers Club and enjoyed making wooden toys for children and designing lawn ornaments. After retirement, he completed the Master Gardener training and enjoyed volunteering with the Organic Gardeners of Long Island.
Sal is survived by his wife of 62 years, JoAnn; his son, Sal Iglio, and partner Dawn Stump; his daughter April, and her husband Christopher Llewellyn; his three grandchildren, Sean, Grace, and Kieran Llewellyn; and his brother, Michael Iglio; as well as many brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Anna Iglio; and in-laws, Francis and Evelyn Brennan.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville. It will be live streamed at http://www.youtube.com/c/StThereseCatholicChurchMooresvilleNC.
There will be a graveside service at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y., on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 12 noon.
