A Statesville man has been arrested in connection with an incident involving shots being fired at a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot on Sunday afternoon.
The Statesville Police Department announced Monday that Keandre Terrell Cauthen, 18, was taken into custody later Sunday and charged with discharging a firearm into occupied property.
Officers were dispatched to the Walmart store at 1116 Crossroads Drive about 1:35 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of shots fired, according to an SPD news release. After arriving at the scene officers located a vehicle in the parking lot that had been struck by gunfire. Several shell casings were also found at the scene, police said.
Investigators spoke with witnesses and reviewed security video and identified a vehicle that the suspects used to flee the area, according to the news release. Prior to the shooting, the suspects had been involved in a larceny inside the store, police said.
The SPD Criminal Investigations Division responded and began an active investigation. A short time later, the suspect vehicle was located at a residence, and Cauthen was located and arrested without incident.
In addition to the firearm offense, Cauthen was also charged with one count of misdemeanor larceny. He was jailed in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
At this time, a second suspect involved in the incident has not yet been identified. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Statesville Police Department at 704-878-3406.
