George Kelly Moore Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on June 5, 2025. at the age of 92. He was born on July 30, 1932 in Cliffside, N.C., to George Kelly “GK” Moore and Virginia Yopp Moore.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, July 11, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Dilworth United Methodist Church in Charlotte.
The Moore family moved from North Carolina to Florida when George was a child. He was active in the DeMolay Society in preparation to become a Freemason like his father. In his younger days, he enjoyed working for his father’s clothing chain, Egerton and Moore, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
George graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science. He was active in several clubs and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. While there, he met his wife of 68 years, Sue Perry Deaton. After graduation, the college sweethearts were married in her hometown of Charlotte at Dilworth United Methodist Church and soon moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. He then pursued an accounting degree at the University of Florida and earned his CPA designation. He was active in Kiwanis and Civitan. George and Sue raised their family in Florida, but when he was offered the chance to open a new corporate accounting office in Charlotte as Partner in Charge, they gladly returned to their home state.
From his early days of fishing on the Blue Run River in Dunnellon, Fla., to his sheer delight at throwing cast nets in the Gulf, he always loved being on the water. He was an avid outdoorsman who had a passion for hunting and fishing with his son. He loved his family more than anything else and never missed his daughter’s horse shows. His is a legacy of hard work, love and faith, and he exhibited these in everything he did.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Perry Deaton Moore; his sister Virginia Moore Sexton (Dennis) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughter Sunny Moore Tillman (Hal) of Birmingham, Ala., and son Kelly Moore (Meg) of Mooresville, N.C.; grandchildren Perry Tillman (Leigh), Grace Tillman Williams (Harris) of Birmingham, Ala.; Patrick Moore of Lexington, Ky., Hunter Moore, and Will Moore of Mooresville, N.C.; three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson who is his namesake, all of Birmingham, Ala.; and nephews and cousins.
