Former City Councilman William Morgan on Monday officially filed to run for Statesville mayor in the November 4 election.

“I want to help create an even better Statesville for all our people,” Morgan said. “I’m going to work hard to earn the vote of every citizen because I want to unify our city behind common goals: smart growth, improved public safety, more good jobs, and decency and respect for all people.”
Morgan said his goals for Statesville are the product of a lifetime of service to his hometown in business, local government, and in civic roles. He wants to help lead a city that acts on positive ideas that benefit everyone.
“Statesville can only reach its potential if everyone’s life can be improved, and if every citizen’s voice is heard,” explained.
Morgan, 61, graduated from Statesville High School and Wake Forest University. His public service includes five years on the Statesville Planning Board (2008-2013) and Statesville City Council from 2013-2022. He served as mayor pro tempore from 2018-2022.
In 2016, Morgan was appointed by the governor to the N.C. Financial Literacy Commission. In 2020, he was appointed by the N.C. Speaker of the House to serve on the N.C. Economic Development Board, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and he currently chairs the Megasite and Select Site Committee responsible for attracting industry into North Carolina.
Morgan also served as a board member of the N.C. League of Municipalities, the Charlotte Area Regional Transportation Organization, the Lake Norman Regional Transportation board, was treasurer of the Centralina Council of Governments, and a member of the Western North Carolina Rail Commission.
He currently serves as Advocacy Chair for the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce. He is a founding member of Fourth Creek Rotary Club, a former board member at The Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center, previous chair of the area Red Cross, and a youth soccer coach.
Morgan is president of Capital Management Group of the Carolinas Inc., a wealth management firm he founded in 1990. He and his wife Tina are members of First Presbyterian Church in Statesville, where he previously served as a deacon. He is the father of Margaret Morgan Reid and is looking forward to becoming a grandfather in October.
