Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of  Ian Kelley Shuemaker, 42, of no fixed address in a news release on Monday.

ICSO deputy S. Zalepka was dispatched to an abandoned home at 496 Brawley School Road about 7:11 p.m. on July 13 in response to 911 call that was disconnected, the sheriff said.

After arriving at the residence, Deputy Zalepka observed that a side door to the residence was open and appeared to have been pried. Due to the suspicious nature of the situation, Deputy Zalepka requested assistance from Deputy Von Letkemann, and the two deputies conducted a sweep of the residence.

While clearing the basement, the deputies located Shuemaker hiding behind the basement stairs, according to the news release. He was taken into custody without incident.

Further investigation revealed that Shuemaker had accidentally called 911 before deputies were dispatched, Campbell said.

Shuemaker was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center and brought before Magistrate T. Thompson. While the suspect was awaiting his bond determination, a small Ziploc bag containing approximately 1.45 grams of methamphetamine fell from his person onto the floor, Campbell said.

Magistrate Thompson found probable cause to charge Shuemaker with felony breaking or entering, felony possession of methamphetamine, and felony possession of a controlled substance in a local jail. Shuemaker was issued a $25,000 secured bond.

According to the ICSO, Shuemaker is on federal probation for a federal narcotics conviction.
