A teenager drowned while swimming in Lake Norman near Mooresville on Friday afternoon.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said the body of 16-year-old Kaleb Lamar Shields was recovered from the lake around 6:43 p.m.
ICSO personnel responded to the lake near Catalina Drive around 3:20 p.m. in response to a call about a possible drowning.
When the deputies arrived on the scene, they learned that a teen had been swimming in the lake had not returned to the surface, Campbell said.
The ICSO Lake Patrol Unit quickly responded to the location and began using sonar equipment and the agency’s Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in the search effort. Personnel from multiple local fire agencies and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission officers also assisted in the search.
The teen’s body, which was found underwater by the ROV, was recovered and then transported to shore.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young individual whose life was lost today,” Campbell said.
