Mr. Waitsell Delano Lackey, 89, of Stony Point, N.C., passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025. Born on July 2, 1936, in Iredell County, he lived a long, faithful life marked by quiet strength, devotion, and grace.
A proud graduate of Scotts High School, Class of 1957, Mr. Lackey spent more than sixty years in the furniture industry. From the factory floor to leadership roles, he worked with diligence and honor, earning the respect of those around him through his deep knowledge and unwavering integrity. His life was deeply rooted in faith, singing gospel music, and he was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Mr. Lackey raised his family in a home centered on Scripture, prayer, and the love of God. That spiritual foundation shaped his every step and was evident in the way he lived—with humility, compassion, and steadfast purpose. He found joy in life’s simple blessings: tending his garden, repairing things around the house, and working with his hands. These quiet, consistent acts reflected his love for nurturing, creating, and providing for his loved ones. Also loving on his grand kids!!
Mr. Lackey was first married to Faye Belle Jolly Lackey, with whom he shared 36 blessed years until her passing. Together, they built a home grounded in love, faith, and family. He later found companionship and continued joy in marriage with his beloved wife of 32 years, Donnie Church Lackey, who survives him at their home in Stony Point. He is also survived by his children, Mark Lackey and wife Angie of Taylorsville, Karen Thomas and husband Jeff of Sparta, and Greg Lackey of Taylorsville; and stepsons Terry Church of Stony Point and Mike Church and wife Roxanne of Chicago. He also leaves behind his brother, Grover Lackey of Statesville, eleven grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Faye Belle Jolly Lackey; his son, Richard Lynn Lackey; daughter-in-law, Tayne Hefner Lackey; and fourteen siblings.
A funeral service honoring Mr. Lackey’s life will be held on August 6,2025, at Wayfound Baptist Church, 560 Wayfound Church Road, Hiddenite, N.C. Visitation will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 3 p.m.
Reverend Jimmy Bowman and Michaell White will conduct the service. Pallbearers are Josh Thomas, Chris Thomas, Alex Lackey, Andy Lackey, Jordan Lackey and Stevie Lackey. Honorary Pallbearers are Nick Thomas, Jack Thomas, Soren Thomas and Rylyn Williams.
Mr. Waitsell Delano Lackey leaves behind a legacy of faith, humility, and quiet strength. His memory will continue to bless all who knew and loved him.
