Mary Joy Smith Appleby, 74, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C., surrounded by love and care.

Born on October 19, 1950, in Gaston County, N.C., Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Oren Smith and Nellie Thompson Smith. A woman of quiet strength and deep compassion, she dedicated her life to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a local elder care home. Her gentle spirit and kind heart left a lasting impact on all those she served.

Mary is survived by her loving sister, Mary Jane Butler, and her devoted niece and primary caregiver, Brenda Griffin, whose unwavering care and support provided Mary with comfort and dignity throughout her final journey.

She will be remembered for her selfless nature, warm smile, and the grace with which she lived her life. Her legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Though she is gone from our sight, Mary Joy Smith Appleby will remain forever in our hearts.
