Joy Mae Stewart Byers, 90, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on August 8, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. A native of Catawba County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Sloan Ulyses and Ada Luejean Moose Stewart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Jerry F. Byers Sr.; her son, Jerry F. Byers Jr.; and her sister, Brenda Stewart Singleton.

Joy was a graduate of Celeste Henkel High School and attended several classes at Mitchell Community College. For most of her working career, she was a medical assistant to Dr. Charles Bevis. Joy loved to travel and took every opportunity that she had available to go places. She was a faithful member of New Bethany Baptist Church and made sure that her family knew how much they meant to her.

Joy is survived by her son, Jeff Byers (Janet Bost Byers) of Statesville; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Newton Byers of Huntersville; her grandson, Jacob Byers of Statesville; and a great-grandson, Peyton Byers. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Two nephews, Dean and Joel Singleton, and a niece, Alesha Mash, stand out as they provided care and comfort to her in her later days.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1 until 2 p.m. at New Bethany Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow the visitation, beginning at 2 p.m., in the New Bethany Baptist Church Sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
