Nancy Elizabeth Toney, 86, passed peacefully on September 1, 2025, at the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville, N.C., surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Huntington, W.Va., Nancy was one of seven siblings raised by James and Rausa Weber. She often recited their names — Barbara, Rosie, Nancy, Jimmy, Mary, Sharon, and Pattie — with ease, even in her final days. Her only brother preceded her in death 17 years earlier, also on September 1, and an eighth child of the Webers, Carol, passed at birth. A cheerleader at St. Joseph Catholic School, Nancy remained close to her classmates and helped organize reunions for their tight-knit group, including one at her home on Lake Norman.
After high school, Nancy married Ronald H. Toney, beginning a 67-year journey filled with hard work, love, laughter, and adventure. They raised four children — Ron Jr. (Wendy), Renee (John), Randy (Cathy), and Rick — each born in a different city as they followed Ron’s airline career. Eventually settling in Charlotte, N.C., Nancy built a 25-year career at Duke Energy, earning respect across departments from cash remittance to telecommunications and compensation. While working full time and raising a busy household, she also earned her B.A. from Queens University.
The Toney home was a whirlwind of activity — scouts, sports, music, marching bands, cheerleading, karate, part-time jobs, and plenty of chores. Nancy encouraged it all, instilling a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. She even launched a successful awards business with son, Rick, taking business classes together and building something that continues today.
Influenced by her mother’s creativity, Nancy sewed everything from doll dresses to dance uniforms, suit jackets for her sons, and a patriotic costume for Rick that now hangs framed in their home. Her hands were always busy knitting, crocheting and crafting.
After retiring to Lake Norman in Sherrills Ford, Nancy embraced lake life with jet skiing, pontoon rides, and lively gatherings. In her 70s, she took clogging lessons in her 80s, she introduced line dancing to her Mooresville retirement community. When she stopped driving, she delighted in car rides with family, pointing out dream homes and soaking in nature’s beauty.
Nancy passed on her love of animals to her children. The family pets — Zerka, Belle, Nicky, Fifi, Homer, Sydney, Teddy the poodle, and Meesha the cat — were cherished companions, each with a story of their own.
Even in her final years, Nancy’s humor never faded. She shared a special bond with her caregiver, Betty, often exchanging a playful “Get out!” with a mischievous grin and a gentle kick of the leg. Her spirit of service remained strong, volunteering with VITA to prepare taxes for those in need and serving as a receptionist at the Hospice House in Sherrills Ford.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Ron; their four children; five grandchildren — Tristan (Rick), John II, Savannah, Hilton, and Hunter — and four great-grandchildren, Maya, Marilyn, Madilyn, and Rick Jr.
A private graveside service will be held on September 22, 2025. Nancy’s final resting place is the Mimosa Columbarium in Davidson, N.C.
