Troutman Fire Rescue personnel, with members of the Catawba, West Iredell and Monticello fire departments, were alerted to conflicting reports of a person on fire, a structure fire and people trapped in the structure on fire on Pecos Lane about 8:20 a.m. Monday.

As units responded to the scene, smoke was visible from miles away. Arriving units transmitted a working fire with a structure, camper and several outbuildings fully involved and multiple explosions from propane tanks.

Iredell County EMS and South Iredell Fire Department’s air van were added to the alarm, along with a call for all off-duty Troutman Firefighters to respond to the alarm.

Crews stretched three hose lines and attacked the massive blaze while dealing with multiple explosions from different sources. All occupants were accounted for, and two individuals were treated and transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials requested an excavator be brought to the scene to help firefighters sift through the rubble and extinguish the fire. Four hours after the initial response, firefighters were still operating at the scene.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. The American Red Cross was called to assist the three occupants.
