Derby in the ‘Dell set for November 7 at the Iredell County Fairgrounds

Proceeds from the event will benefit the historic Chestnut Grove Community Center

Iredell Civic Community United is gearing up for an evening of family fun and friendly competition on Friday, November 7, when it will present the Derby in the ’Dell.

This build-your-own cart race will be held at the Iredell County Fairgrounds. Gates open to the public at 4 p.m., and the races start at 6 p.m.

Admission is free. Residents are invited to cheer on creative teams as they put their handmade carts to the ultimate test of speed and design.

Hot dogs, chips and water/sodas will be available at no charge. Residents are encouraged to bring bag chairs and/or a blanket to sit on. No alcohol beverages, drugs or smoking of any kind are allowed at the event.

This year’s event isn’t just about racing—it’s about community spirit, creativity, giving back and paying it forward. Teams will show off their carts in themed designs, and spectators will get a chance to cast their vote for their favorite. 

All proceeds from the Derby in the ’Dell will go toward the 2025 Imagine Iredell United project, benefiting the revitalization of the Chestnut Grove Community Center. By participating, residents can enjoy an unforgettable night of energy, laughter, and pride—while helping build a brighter future for Iredell County.

Local businesses and organizations will have the chance to get involved through sponsorships.

The Iredell Civic Community United (ICCU) is a group of service clubs, churches, corporate volunteers, and other entities dedicated to empowering nonprofits and other organizations, to drive positive change, and to address pressing needs within our communities.

By providing support and assistance through this innovative partnership, ICCU can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families.

♦ When: Friday, November 7; gates open to public at 4 p.m.; race to start at 6 p.m.
♦ Where: Iredell County Fairgrounds, 630 N Main Street in Troutman
♦ Derby Teams: Gate opens at 3 p.m. to set up for 4 p.m. inspection

  • After Sponsors & Derby Race Teams have submitted their payment, an email will be sent to the Derby Team Captain with Derby Cart specifications and requirements as well as a full team signup form and waivers.  All documents will need to be signed and returned prior to the Race on November 7 in order to participate.  
  • United Way of Iredell County serves as ICCU’s fiscal agent.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

The volunteer support team will arrive at 3 p.m. as the Race Teams are arriving and getting their carts set up.  As the event approaches, emails with further details and role assignments will be sent out.

Volunteer sign up is being managed in HIVE (Helping Iredell Volunteers Engage), United Way’s online portal.  Once you are a HIVE member, you can respond to this Need on ICCU’s page.
