
Jerry Mayes, 83, of Taylorsville, N.C., departed this life during the early morning hours of Monday, October 27, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving wife. He was born September 14, 1942, in Alexander County, the son of the late Nellie Mildred Mayes.
Jerry was a graduate of Happy Plains High School and salutatorian of his class. After graduation he worked for Schneider Mills for many years and was a supervisor when he retired.
Jerry accepted Christ at an early age and was of the Baptist faith. He served many years as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a musician. He served his community as a member and president of the Taylorsville Lions Club and was a member of the Taylorsville Jaycees. In his spare time, he had a passion for NASCAR racing and go-kart races. He also loved gospel music.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his son, Lee Gary Mayes; his brother, Willis Mayes Sr.; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Mayes; and niece, Peggy Marie Parker.
Those left to cherish and honor Jerry’s memories include his loving wife of 61 years, Clara Flowers Mayes; his son, Micheal Mayes of Denver, N.C., Curtis Mayes of Owens, Md.; his daughter, Tilara Mayes Sims (Lee) of Richmond, Va.; his grandchildren, Tashia Gray (Joey) of Griffin, Ga., Shaykila Mayes of Hickory, Caleiah and Camryn Sims of Virginia; his great-grandchildren, Zyon Watson, Saige and Camille Gray, all of Georgia; his sister, Suma Nell Watts of Taylorsville; his nieces, Clarissa El, Theresa M. Dalton (Kenneth), Ingrid M. Smith (Marvin), and Zenobia Gaines (Chris); his nephews, Kirk Douglas Barker, Dean Barker, and Willis Mayes (Tonya); and a host of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025, in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Vince Linney will serve as eulogist and Rev. William Little will officiate. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery on Hwy. 90 East of Taylorsville. The family will receive friends from until 3 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Mayes’ body will lie-in-state from 3 until 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Adams Funeral Home.
