D1 Training, a leading fitness enrichment concept utilizing the five core tenets of athletic-based training, will be reopening a new location at 221 Norman Station Boulevard in Mooresville on December 1 with new ownership and an experienced staff.
The new group fitness facility employs a sports-science backed training regimen led by certified trainers to help people of all ages achieve their sport and fitness goals.
In celebration of the new location’s launch, Mooresville neighbors and residents are encouraged to stop by and meet the facility’s team at its grand opening event, which will also feature an on-site grand opening event on December 1.
Matt Jones will join a roster of impressive existing franchisees, including former professional and collegiate athletes. Additional D1 partners include NBA star Chris Paul and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
For Jones, fitness and coaching have never just been hobbies — they are a way of life. A walk-on football player at the University of Florida with a degree and master’s in international business, Jones has spent the past two decades climbing the ranks of the biotech industry. In his off hours, he also coached his kids’ baseball, volleyball, and soccer teams. Now, he’s combining his passion for mentorship, athletics, and community impact as the new owner of D1 Training Mooresville.
With business partner Geoff Lamb and his wife Kristi by his side, Jones is taking over the 8,400-square-foot facility on Norman Station Boulevard and relaunching it this fall with a renewed commitment to community and performance. Under previous ownership, the location gained a loyal following but struggled due to operational challenges.
Jones, who plans to open eight additional locations across the South in the future, stepped in with the goal of rebuilding trust, honoring former members, and restoring the energy that made this gym such a valued part of the community. The Mooresville location will employ between four and 10 staff initially, with plans to grow across the greater Lake Norman area. Jones says the local schools, strong youth sports scene, and outdoorsy, tight-knit community make it the ideal place to reintroduce D1’s elite training model.
“I’ve spent years investing in my own kids through sports, and stepping into D1 felt like a natural extension of that,” Jones explained. “What drew me in was the culture: hard work, encouragement, and the idea that everyone — from young athletes to adults — can train like a D1 athlete. That message hits home.”
D1 Training offers four age-based programs, including Rookie (ages 7-11), Developmental (ages 12-14), Prep (ages 15-18) and D1 Adult. Each fitness program is based on the five athletic-based tenets: dynamic warm-up, performance, strength program, core and conditioning, and cool down. Outside of group workouts, D1 Training offers group, semi-private, and one-on-one training with world-class coaches. The goal is simple: to continue to train athletes who are dedicated to their sport or fitness goals, regardless of age, or athletic background.
“Matt is the ideal candidate to bring the D1 Training experience to Mooresville,” said Chief Operating Officer Dan Murphy. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to the D1 family and are confident in his ability to show the Mooresville area what they’ve been missing out on. D1 is a one-of-a-kind fitness experience that’s built around the individual and meant to help people meet their athletic goals. Our strong network of franchisees embodies our core values to bring the D1 Training vision to life, and we know Matt will do just that in Mooresville and its surrounding communities.”
Strategically expanding across the nation through franchising, D1 Training has more than 100 performance centers open with over 100 additional locations in various stages of development. The brand is currently seeking financially qualified business builders, former athletes, and entrepreneurs, who share a passion for fitness and youth sports, who are ready to make a positive impact on their community.
