Shelvia “Shelby” Jean McAlister Nelson, 73, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 9, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on October 29, 1952, Shelby was the daughter of the late Roy McAlister and Betty Cockrell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James McAlister; and her husband, Bobby Gandy.
Shelby was a creative soul who found joy in crafting — especially making beautiful wreaths. She also loved fishing and spending tranquil days on the water. Above all, her favorite pastime was simply sitting and talking with those she loved.
She is survived by her seven children, Reggie Vanzant (Laura), Deborah Carter (Jeff), Tara Dowling, Kimberly Peterson (Caleb), Misty Knight (Zac), Brett Burkhart Jr. (Amber), and Bradley Burkhart (Heather); eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her best friend, Gail Lowery; and her cherished dogs, Roxy Ann and Paisley Jane, who were always by her side.
In accordance with Shelby’s wishes, no memorial service will be held.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses and staff for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to Lake Norman Humane Society or Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
