Special to IFN
Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center and the N.C. Falconers Guild joined forces on Sunday for their 7th annual World Falconry Day, turning tradition into a lively community celebration. From curious kids to seasoned bird lovers, visitors enjoyed raptors, owls, and hands‑on fun.
Falconry—the ancient practice of working with raptors in partnership with humans—was front and center, with flight demonstrations and falconers strolling through the crowd to share stories and answer questions. Guests also discovered Allison Woods’ Outdoor Learning Center’s onsite and traveling Owl Pals programs, perfect for those young and old who want a closer look at these mysterious nighttime hunters.
Community partners including the Iredell Children’s Museum, Iredell County Library, Statesville Fitness, and a local Girl Scout troop kept the energy buzzing, while Pat Parker of Troutman Café served up delicious food. Activity areas stayed busy, and the event offered excellent photographer opportunities with raptors in flight and owls up close.
Founded in 1992, Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center is a nonprofit dedicated to environmental education. With Field Trips, Summer Camps, Forest School, Little Explorers for the wee ones, and animal ambassador programs, the center operates on grants, donations, and program fees to keep nature education alive and feed their Animal Ambassadors.
