
Mr. Colbert Spann, beloved son of the late John Gerald Sr. and Bertha Spain Gerald, was born in Conway, S.C., on May 23, 1950. He departed this life on Monday, December 22, 2025, at his home. He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Feimster Spain, who survives. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Quan Gerald.
He attended School in South Carolina and was employed by Piedmont Gas Company for many years. He served with the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Zion Wesley AME Zion Church in Troutman.
Cal, as he was affectionately called, leaves to cherish the memory of his life his loving wife, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Feimster Spain of the home; his children, Toinette Spain McElrath of Grand Praire, Texas, Charnese Spain and Larnese Spain Grier, both of Charlotte, and Alicia Maghadam of Charlotte; his siblings, Ella (Willie) Scott, GiGi Desmore, and Patricia Gerald and Elder J. Glenn Gerald III, all of Charlotte; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tarnell (Tony) Lazenby of Stony Point, Francis (Alice) Feimster Jr. of Charlotte, Cassandra F. Ramsey of the home; Shelia (James-deceased) Fleming of Charlotte, Henry L. Femister of Troutman, Thomas R. Femister of Washington, D.C., and Michelle (Stanley) Bailey of Salisbury; his grandchildren, Reshard A. McElrath, Nicholas Moghadam, Nolan Moghadam, Niles Moghadam, Itslis Mills, Indya Wilson and Olivia Russell; his great grandchildren, Zaid O. McElrath, Kensley Grier and Pralowe Grier Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors, church family and friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Monday, December 29, 2025, at Zion Wesley AME Zion Church in Troutman. Reverend Michael Mitchell will officiate and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
Mr. Spain will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 11:30 a.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12 until 1 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times.
