An eastern Iredell County resident faces felony drug charges after being stopped for a motor vehicle violation by an Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Gregory David Evans, 54, of Log Cabin Road, Statesville, in a news release on Monday.

Deputy J. Berrier was patrolling Salisbury Highway on December 23 when he observed a Dodge pickup truck’s tag lights were not working and that the vehicle’s registration had expired, Campbell said. Deputy Berrier stopped the vehicle near 1532 Salisbury Highway and made contact with the two occupants.

While another deputy issued Evans, who was driving the truck, a warning for the traffic violations, Deputy Berrier deployed his canine partner, K-9 Enyo, for an open-air sniff around the vehicle, the sheriff said.

After K-9 Enyo alerted for the presence of narcotics inside, Deputy Berrier searched the truck and located approximately 5 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, and various items of drug paraphernalia, according to the news release. Evans stated the narcotics belonged to him, Campbell said.

Evans was arrested and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, felony maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, and misdemeanor drug offense. Magistrate Hollar ordered him held without bond since he was already being out on bond for a prior meth-related charge.

According to the ICSO, Evans’ criminal history includes the following charges: Felony Possession with the Intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Methamphetamine, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for a Controlled Substance, Felony Sell and Deliver Methamphetamine, and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
