Nita Josephine Byrd Gatton, 82, of Olin, N.C., a beloved member of her community, passed away on January 19, 2026. Born in Marlboro County, S.C., on March 20, 1943, she led a life characterized by her commitment to family, faith, and service. After retiring from Iredell-Statesville Schools in the late 1990s, she spent her time as a homemaker and caring for her family.

Beyond her professional contributions, Nita was a devoted member of Ham’s Grove Baptist Church. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, inspiring those around her. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Kenny Gatton; her grandchildren, Jennifer Brooke Deal (Justin), Heather Gatton (EJ), and Dusty Gatton; her great-grandchildren Destiny, Cody, Michael, Addyson, Trey, Jordan and Treylen; a great-great-grandson, Bentley; her two nieces, Becky and Sherry; three nephews, Scotty, Mark and Todd; and her best friend, Nelda.

Nita was preceded in death by her father, James Walter Byrd Sr., her mother, Elizabeth Evans Byrd, and her husband, Robert Clay Gatton, two children, Tim and Kaye, two grandchildren, Mindy and Chase, and a great-grandson, Dylan. She was also preceded in death by three siblings, Eileen, Patsy, and James Walter.

Her love for cleanliness, cooking, and spending time with her family were hallmarks of her spirited personality. Nita had a unique ability to bring warmth and joy to her home, creating a welcoming environment for all who entered.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Nicholson Funeral Home, located at 135 E Front Street, Statesville, NC 28677. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate her remarkable life. Burial will follow in the Ham’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cody, Michael, Trey, Jordan, Treylen and Ricky.

Nita will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, devotion, and service to others will continue to inspire those left behind.
