The Statesville Police Department’s Special Response Team was activated Thursday morning and deployed to the 1300 block of Wilson Lee Boulevard in response to a report of gunshots being fired in the area.

Officers responded to the area about 10 a.m. after the SPD received reports that an individual was walking down the street and discharging a firearm randomly, police said in a news release.

The subject had fled on foot by the time officers arrived, according to the SPD.

While searching for the individual, officers received information indicating the subject may have entered a nearby residence.

The Special Response Team responded to the scene to assist out of “an abundance of caution. “Iredell County Sheriff’s Office personnel also responded, and its Bearcat armored response vehicle remained on standby.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence and then cleared the home without further incident, according to the SPD.

There is no ongoing threat to the public at this time, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
