Mrs. Mary Lee Brandon Heaggans, affectionately known to her family as “Sue,” was born on March 30, 1939, in Davidson, N.C., to the late John and Fannie Brandon. She was their oldest daughter and grew to be a beloved pillar of strength, love, and humor within her family.
Sue graduated from Torrence-Lytle High School in Huntersville, N.C., and continued her education at Livingstone College in Salisbury. With her adventurous spirit, she later traveled to New York City for what was meant to be a summer job—but instead, she embraced the city and made it her home for many years. In the early 1970s, she returned to her family home in Davidson, where she continued building a life rooted in love, commitment, and community.
On July 31, 1987, Sue married the love of her life, Leonard Heaggans, who cherished her deeply. The two made their home in Troutman, N.C., where they shared more than three beautiful decades together. Sue was lovingly chauffeured throughout her life—first by her younger siblings, whom she proudly provided with their very first car, then by her father and relatives, and later by her devoted husband, Leonard.
Sue’s love for her family ran deep. She eagerly looked forward to every gathering, celebration, and reunion—especially the Brandon Family Reunion, where her joy, quick wit, and good humor filled any room she entered. She had a remarkable ability to keep everyone laughing, smiling, and enjoying the togetherness she treasured so dearly. Her presence was warm, her spirit gentle, and her love unwavering. Family was truly her heart.
Sue accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Davidson, where she remained a member until relocating to New York. After marrying Leonard in 1987, the couple joined Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, N.C., which became their spiritual home.
Throughout her career, Sue worked with dedication and pride. She retired from Engineer Components in Troutman, N.C. Her earlier employment included National Welders in Charlotte and General Time, where she worked upon returning to Davidson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jonni Atkinson; brother, William Brandon; daughter, Alexandria Heaggans; in-laws Rufus and Catherine Heaggans Sr.; sister-in-love Sylvia (Zolley) Young; and brothers-in-love, Derrick Arnold and Wilford Heaggans.
Sue leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Leonard Heaggans; her children, Sonya (LaMont) Adams, Tammy McDaniel, and Rodney Wilson; her grandchildren, Calynn, Shante, Carsyn and Braylen; great-granddaughter, Kaylah; and her siblings, Harold (Geneva) Brandon, Tyrone (Sharon) Brandon, Trimona, Brandon Lomax, Kimbali, and Allen, sister-in-love, Andrais Brandon; her extended family, sisters-in-law, Beverly Heaggans and Lisia (Curtis) Pearson; brother-in-law, Rufus (Annette) Heaggans Jr.; her beloved, uncle, Curtis Brandon Sr., who was not only an uncle but a treasured friend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever carry her memory.
Mary “Sue” will be fondly remembered as a gentle soul with a calming presence, quiet strength, and a kind heart. Mild-mannered yet deeply loving, she stood faithfully by her family, offering support, encouragement, and unwavering devotion.
Proverbs 22:4 – “The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”
