More than 150 people, including 37 veterans, attended the Community Day of Appreciation hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont on Saturday, May 10.

Held at the Club’s facility on Cochran Street in Statesville, the event provided young people a chance to meet and thank local veterans for their service and sacrifice. All veterans were given thank you cards that were handmade Boys & Girls Club members.

Sponsors of the event included Foundation of Hope Ministries, Piedmont Veterans Assistance Council, G4G Ministers and the Statesville Police Department.

Several community-based agencies were on hand to share information and resources. including Feed NC, Iredell County Veterans Services, Integrated Care of Greater Hickory, and Piedmont Mediation Center.

One of the highlights of the event was a display of military equipment and vehicles by VFW Post 5466 in Taylorsville.

Organizers were pleased with the turnout and hope to make it an annual project for the Boys & Girls Club and supporting partners.

“It is important to use events like this to teach young people about the service and sacrifice that our veterans made, and continue to make daily, to protect our democracy and American way of life,” said Cory Knight, executive director of Boys & Girls Club.

“We are incredibly grateful to all community partners that made the event possible and to our veterans, to whom we owe so much.”
