Troutman Fire & Rescue personnel, along with the N.C. Forestry Service, were dispatched to a grass and woods fire on the Barium Springs property about 10:41 a.m. Monday. A large header could be seen from a distance, and arriving units encountered a large area burning adjacent to the construction site being fed by strong winds. Monticello Volunteer Fire Department responded with an additional brush truck, and construction crews used heavy equipment to knock down burning trees.

The fire was placed under control at 11:38 a.m. with a little over two acres burned. Firefighters were on the scene several more hours hitting the hot spots and overhauling the area. The blaze was caused by a controlled burn that got out of control, officials said.
