The City of Statesville is rolling out a series of department and facility name updates that more clearly reflect the work its teams have been doing for years, supporting recreation, community engagement, and the ongoing vitality of the city’s public spaces. The updated names provide clearer alignment with the services already in place while maintaining the same commitment to community that residents have always known.
Department Name Update: Statesville Recreation and Economic Vitality
The department previously known as Recreation and Parks will now be called Statesville Recreation and Economic Vitality.
This update acknowledges the department’s broadened role, which has grown to include:
• Continued parks and recreation programming
• Oversight of the Statesville Event Center
• Collaboration with the Downtown Statesville Development Corporation (DSDC)
• Support for community centered economic activity and cultural experiences
While DSDC remains a nonprofit partner, the two staff positions dedicated to downtown development are now part of the Recreation and Economic Vitality team, strengthening coordination and providing additional support to the heart of our city.
“Our team’s mission has always centered on building community,” said Richard Griggs, director of Statesville Recreation and Economic Vitality. “As our responsibilities have expanded, these updated names simply reflect the work we are already doing, supporting recreation, the cities vitality, and the spaces and programs that bring people together.”
Two popular facilities are also receiving names that more accurately reflect how they are used and recognized today.
♦ Statesville Fitness and Activity Center is being renamed Statesville Recreation Center.
Residents have long referred to the facility as the Recreation Center (The Rec). The updated name matches how the community identifies the space and reflects its role as an accessible, active gathering place for all ages.
♦ Statesville Civic Center is being renamed the Statesville Event Center.
As the venue has evolved to host conferences, expos, weddings, performances, and multi-day events, the new name better communicates the range of experiences offered and supports the city’s ability to attract regional gatherings.
Why the Updates Matter
The updated names are designed to make City services clearer and more accessible, helping residents and visitors:
• More easily identify programs, facilities, and resources
• Understand how related services connect across the city
• Engage more fully with recreation, events, and community offerings
These adjustments also help Statesville remain competitive in attracting events and activities that benefit the broader community.
What Residents Can Expect
Over the coming months, the new names will appear on signage, websites, printed materials, and city communications. The work itself and the people doing it remain unchanged.
Residents will continue to see:
• The same dedicated teams
• The same commitment to community
• The same high-quality programs, facilities, and experiences
The updated names simply provide clearer alignment with the City’s ongoing work and growing partnerships.
