Mitchell Community College honored over 400 graduates of associate degree, diploma and certificate programs during the annual commencement exercises held on May 17 at the Mooresville Performing Arts Center.
Calling it a “momentous occasion,” College President James T. Brewer congratulated the graduates for their accomplishments.
“You have each worked hard to be here today, and this ceremony is a celebration of everything you have accomplished,” Brewer said in his speech. “To say that we are living in extraordinary times is truly an understatement, but extraordinary times also present extraordinary opportunities. As a graduate of Mitchell Community College, you are prepared to navigate and thrive in a world that is constantly changing. You’ve demonstrated resilience, determination, and the ability to adapt. And those qualities will serve you well in whatever path you pursue.”
This year’s commencement address was delivered by Molly Grantham, a four-time Emmy Award winning journalist, author and speaker.
“What you do with these words is up to you,” Grantham said as she concluded her speech to graduates. “Hear the power of these three words: Bet. On. Yourself. There is power in those words. I think all of us would say we believe in ourselves but it’s a softer thought. To bet on yourself is fierce. To bet on yourself is to take action …So when you take that first step – whatever that looks like for you – then you are betting on you.”
In a message that reflects Mitchell’s strategic vision to empower the futures of its students, Grantham encouraged students to “bet on themselves” in a way that embraces unlimited opportunity as lifelong learners.
