Iredell County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bert Connolly announced on Monday that he will seek re-election in 2026.

“Over the past three years, I have had the privilege of serving the people of Iredell County,” Connolly, a Republican, said in his campaign announcement. “I am proud of the meaningful progress achieved in supporting education, strengthening public safety, promoting economic growth, and strengthening county services.”

Connolly, who is also chief deputy for the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, said he has publicly opposed rampant residential development in the county’s fast-growing municipalities during his first term on the board.

“While a county commissioner has no direct authority over annexations or growth decisions in the towns and the city, I have been — and will continue to be — vocal in my opposition to excessive residential growth,” he said. “Unchecked development strains our schools, roads, and quality of life. Growth must be managed responsibly to protect our rural character and ensure that Iredell County remains a place where citizens and businesses can thrive.”

Connolly was recently re-elected chairman by his fellow commissioners for the upcoming year.

Connolly said his priorities include protecting the county’s rural character, expanding opportunities for citizens, supporting local businesses, strengthening county services, promoting economic growth, and maintaining a low tax rate.

“With your continued trust and support, we can keep Iredell County strong, vibrant, and prepared for the future — without sacrificing the values that make our county special,” he said. “I humbly ask for your vote and partnership once again. Together, we can keep Iredell County moving forward responsibly.”

Candidate filing for 2026 elections runs through Friday, December 19.
