Special to IFN

The Iredell County Public Library is preparing to launch Young Athletes, an inclusive early childhood play program developed by Special Olympics. Beginning in September 2025, organizers of this initiative will host events at local parks to provide engaging physical activities for children ages 2 to 7, both with and without intellectual disabilities.

Fostering foundational motor skills and promoting social development through fun and structured play, the Young Athletes program will also include visits from the new Mobile Library. Program sessions will be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month, from September through December, from 4 to 5 p.m.

The library is proud to partner with the following organizations to bring this impactful program to the community: Special Olympics North Carolina – Iredell County, Iredell County Parks and Recreation, and Statesville Recreation and Parks

“When I stumbled upon the Special Olympics Young Athletes program in my research for our Mobile Library services, I immediately knew that it would be a perfect way to collaborate with other organizations to benefit our community,” said Outreach Librarian Grace Schermerhorn, who spearheaded the collaboration between the library and the partnering organizations. “I am so grateful that our partners were also enthusiastic about making this idea a reality.

“I look forward to assisting with the Young Athletes program and to bringing the Mobile Library out with materials specifically aligned with our goals to encourage lifelong health.”
