The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new, state-of-the-art Mobile Command Unit, on Wednesday afternoon.

Funded with a $1 million appropriation from the N.C. General Assembly and about $100,000 in local funding, the advanced operations center will dramatically enhance coordination and response during disasters, critical incidents, and large-scale emergencies in Iredell County and the surrounding region.

Built on a 2025 Peterbilt 567 chassis by Montana-based Nomad GCS, the 48-foot vehicle weighs more than 20 tons.

“During hurricane Helene, it became clear that Western North Carolina lacked sufficient mobile command resources,” Sheriff Darren Campbell said. “This investment changes that. With this new unit, our teams can respond faster, coordinate more effectively, and protect more lives both here in Iredell County and beyond.”

The sheriff expressed his appreciation to Sen. Vickie Sawyer, Reps. Todd Carver, Jeff McNeely and Mitchell Setzer and former Rep. Grey Mills during remarks at the Sheriff’s Office Annex prior to showing off the vehicle.

“This project was made possible through the leadership and support of our local delegation and the General Assembly,” Campbell said. “Their commitment ensures first responders across North Carolina have the technology they need to save lives.”

Cutting-Edge Technology

The Mobile Command Unit features advanced communication and data systems, including computer-aided dispatch, satellite and internet connectivity, and real-time interoperable communication for law enforcement, fire, EMS, emergency management, and our media partners.

Personnel will have access to live video monitoring, digital mapping, and crime scene response tools, empowering commanders to make rapid, informed decisions in dynamic environments.

“The Mobile Command Unit brings every resource we need under one roof, from tactical operations to disaster management,” Campbell said. “It ensures seamless communication and coordination when every second counts.”

Regional Collaboration and Preparedness

This new capability supports the broader mission of the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association Statewide Disaster Assistance Network, which continues to expand critical emergency infrastructure throughout the state.

“This unit isn’t just an Iredell County asset, it’s a regional one,” Campbell said. “When neighboring counties face emergencies, we’ll be ready to assist. This command center allows us to deploy anywhere and serve anyone in need.”

Protecting the Present, Preparing for the Future

The addition of this Mobile Command Unit establishes Iredell County as a leader in emergency preparedness, interagency coordination, and public safety innovation. It will serve as a centralized command post during major incidents, natural disasters, and large community events, ensuring that all responders can operate effectively from one location.

“This is more than just a vehicle, it’s a command post on wheels, built to bring calm to chaos,” said Campbell. “We’re proud to know that when disaster strikes, Iredell County will be ready to respond.”
