Iredell Health System and the Iredell Physician Network announced this week that Dr. Rob Theiss has joined the practice at Iredell Pain Management.

Theiss earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Spanish from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., and completed medical school at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. He completed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Pain Management residencies at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, serving as chief resident. Theiss recently completed a pain management fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he was chief fellow.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Theiss was drawn to Iredell Health because of the opportunity to build relationships in a close-knit community setting.
“After spending three years in the Charlotte area for residency training, my wife and I knew that it was the perfect place to call home,” said Theiss. “I was looking for a more intimate community setting to practice, where I could have the resources to deliver the highest quality care while building relationships with patients and supportive co-workers. Iredell Health checked every box.”
His interest in pain management stems from a desire to meet patients where they are.
“Pain is the most common complaint for those presenting to a doctor and I wanted to try and meet this glaring need by becoming an expert in the newest and most effective available treatments,” explained Theiss. “I have loved ones, as many of us do, that have been affected by the opioid crisis. Chronically painful conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inspired me to develop novel solutions to these problems. As a former athlete, I was drawn to musculoskeletal and sports medicine and love that the field requires great teamwork.”
Patients can expect a personable, honest, and compassionate physician who wants patients in pain to feel better and leave the office feeling satisfied with the service they were given.
Theiss takes a multimodal approach to pain management.
“Multimodal therapy is a tailored and comprehensive treatment plan consisting of a combination of physical and occupational therapy, interventional injections and procedures, medications, and mind-body strategies or other holistic approaches. The overall goal is to decrease suffering and avoid re-injury when at all possible,” he said.
The healthcare goals of his patients are his top priority.
“My residency in physical medicine and rehab trained me to think in terms of quality of life and functional outcomes, as opposed to hitting certain labs and numbers,” he said. :More important than my goals are the patient’s goals, whether that be playing with the kids or grandkids or training for a marathon.”
Outside the office, Theiss enjoys spending time with his wife, whom he met playing college basketball at Allegheny College. He is a sports fanatic, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers and competing yearly in his fantasy football leagues. He loves fishing and attending concerts (Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, Jay-Z, and Earth, Wind, and Fire to name a few) and traveling. His most recent excursion was to an African safari and Seychelles on his honeymoon.
He shares a favorite healthy tip for those struggling with arthritis.
“Low-impact activity such as stationary biking and swimming allows those with arthritis to exercise while putting less pressure on their joints,” he said.
