Over 330 participants and 26 volunteers gathered to lace up for a cure on Saturday, October 4, at the Statesville Family YMCA, raising an estimated $37,000 to help patients battling cancer in our community.

The Lacing Up for a Cure 5K, hosted by Iredell Health System, was created to raise community awareness and funds for cancer prevention, treatment, and recovery. All proceeds benefit local cancer patients through the Cancer Patient Support Fund of the Iredell Health Foundation, the health system’s philanthropic arm. This fund assists anyone receiving active cancer treatment that needs help with transportation, lodging, support group activities, and discretionary support.

The idea of a 5K started with a request from an Iredell Health nurse.

“The 2nd Annual Lacing Up for a Cure 5K was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when a community comes together,” shared Kim Holland, development coordinator at Iredell Health Foundation. “This year, we were honored to introduce a Cancer Survivor Walk and a 1-Mile Run/Walk — heartfelt additions that allowed us to celebrate the strength and resilience of those who have faced cancer. The success of this event was made possible by our incredible sponsors, whose generosity fuels both hope and impact. Together, we’re making strides toward helping those in need and investing in the future of our community.”

This event is unique in that it features the chance to sponsor local schools. With a $3,000 sponsorship, 10 students from the school of the sponsor’s choice get to participate in the race and $1,500 goes directly back to that school. This year’s recipients are North Iredell High School, Statesville High School Boosters, and N.B. Mills Elementary School.
