Personnel from four Iredell County fire departments traveled across the county line on Monday to help firefighters from nine different Rowan County departments battle multiple structure fires, including a barn.

The Atwell Township Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a structure fire on Deal Road about 1:10 p.m. Monday. Personnel from West Rowan, Locke Township, Odell, Cleveland, Landis, MT Mitchel, Kannapolis, China Grove and Enochville fire departments were called to the scene, along with personnel from Mooresville, South Iredell, Mount Mourne and Shepherds fire departments.

A water supply was set up and tankers from these departments fed water to members fighting the fire. Both buildings were destroyed and a horse perished in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
