Special to IFN

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office now has a canine working in every high school where ICSO deputies serve as school resource officers.

Pictured are Deputy Lawrence and Canine Chief.

Canine Chief, who works alongside his Deputy Lawrence at West Iredell High School, is the latest addition to the ICSO Canine Unit. Chief is certified in detecting narcotics and trailing, which are valuable skills in a school environment.

This newest canine was made possible through a partnership with Iredell-Statesville Schools.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, canines makes schools safer and help build positive connections between students and law enforcement.

Their presence often helps students feel more comfortable approaching a school resource Officer, opening doors for communication and trust that might not happen otherwise.

“We appreciate Iredell-Statesville Schools for recognizing the value of having canines in our schools and for their continued commitment to providing safe learning environments for all students,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
