North Iredell High School senior Lily Pope has gained valuable experience in veterinary science through her pre-apprenticeship at Animal Hospital of Statesville.

Lily Pope, a pre-apprenticeship student, poses for a picture with a Pyrenees-Anatolian Shepherd mix at Animal Hospital of Statesville.

“I’ve always loved animals. I really wanted to become a vet and this helped me figure that out,” Pope said.

She is in the process of applying for college and plans on majoring in animal sciences or biology.

“After that, I’ll apply for the grad program, hopefully at N.C. State, and go to vet school and work towards being a vet,” she explained.

Pope said that Lauren Irby, her high school animal science teacher, has been instrumental in helping her figure out her career path.

Interning with Animal Hospital of Statesville has allowed Pope to get a lot of hands-on experience working with the animals.

“I love the staff here. They want you to learn everything. They let you do anything you ask them and they are willing to help,” she added.

Pope completed 300 hours at the animal hospital. She assisted the vet techs with holding animals during visits and helped compile necessary information on animals in addition to other responsibilities. She also got to draw blood and observed surgeries from time to time.

“It’s encouraging to see these young people come in a little shy, timid and watch as they gain confidence in themselves. It’s great to see them learn and see them grow,” explained business administrator Laura Baker.

Baker said that students gain skills and experience that they wouldn’t be able to have through regular classes.

“Our staff is very good at allowing students to practice things on their own. We don’t just show them, but we allow them hands-on experience,” Baker said.

About the pre-apprenticeship program

The pre-apprenticeship program is a partnership between Iredell-Statesville Schools, Mitchell Community College, and participating local businesses.

I-SS Executive Director of Industry, Technology, Trade and Business Todd Williams said that pre-apprenticeship students go to school full time and work part time. They work towards a certificate and must obtain 300 clinical hours. Students receive an honors level credit for the pre-apprenticeship and take a test to receive their certificate.

The pre-apprenticeship program offers an introductory, career-focused program that provides hands-on training and industry experience. These programs teach foundational skills, which include academic credit and offer a pathway to a full-time apprenticeship, which often can include progressive wages and tuition reimbursement for related college courses.
