About 100 people protested the actions and policies of the Trump administration during a peaceful demonstration in Downtown Statesville on Thursday evening. Protesters gathered outside of the Statesville Civic Center and held signs criticizing the president’s immigration policies as well as the significant funding cuts to healthcare and education, tax breaks for the wealthy, and the erosion of constitutional protections that have occurred since he took office in January.
The demonstration was one of more than 1,200 held across the country on the fifth annual John Lewis National Day of Action. The “John Lewis Good Trouble” protests honored the legacy of Lewis, a civil rights leader who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 33 years before his death on July 17, 2020. A founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a Freedom Rider, and leader of the “Bloody Sunday” march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965, Lewis encouraged Americans to stand up against injustice. “Speak up, speak out, get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America,” he famously said.
How many of these protesters voted for him?
How many of them could describe what it is they are upset about? What is it that was cut from “healthcare” or “education” has them upset? What is the “Tax Break” rich people are getting that they are mad? What is the new immigration policy do they not like?
I’m sure they can ALL describe what they are upset about. There are so many things on the list. If you don’t understand what this administration is doing to take healthcare away from people, weaken education, hurt, deport, and abuse immigrants, both undocumented AND documented, cutting funding for cancer research, Alzheimer’s research, food programs, undermining science, medicine, etc etc etc – then you are not paying attention.
The same people who ran a shadow government are the same people educating protesters.
Way to go Statesville! I look at these photos and see Americans willing to stand up for their rights and the rights of others being trampled on every day now. These are largely adults 50-70+ years of age that see terrible changes in our society. If someone is offended by this free speech, then look away. This is America, after all. Kudos to everyone who participated!
