A western Iredell County resident faces a felony gun charge after being stopped by an Iredell County Sheriff’s Office for displaying a fake license plate.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest Gary Wayne Woodard, 54, of Brick Yard Road, Statesville, in a news release on Monday.

Deputy Greene, who is assigned to the ICSO Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team, stopped a Hyundai Elantra near Hickory Highway and Brick Yard Road on Saturday, December 13, Campbell said.

While speaking with Woodard, who was driving the vehicle, the deputy learned that his driver’s license was suspended and that he is a convicted felon, according to the news release.

A box of handgun ammunition was visible inside the vehicle, Campbell said. When deputies searched the car, they found a handgun, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.

Woodard was taken into custody and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. Magistrate Callejas issued a $20,000 secured bond on the following charges: felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three misdemeanor drug offenses, driving while license revoked and displaying a fictitious registration plate. 

According to the ICSO, his criminal misdemeanor breach of peace, misdemeanor resist or obstruct a public officer, misdemeanor aid and abet reckless driving, four counts of misdemeanor driving while impaired, two counts of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, misdemeanor littering, three counts of misdemeanor larceny, two counts of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substance, felony possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, two counts of misdemeanor shoplifting, felony larceny, misdemeanor second-degree trespass, and multiple traffic violations.
