Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrests of Chelsie Marie Smith, 35, and Gregory Lillis Smith II, 34, in a news release Monday.

ICSO deputies responded to the residence at 210 Shaw Road in Harmony on June 17 for a welfare check after receiving a report alleging that eight children, ranging in age from 2 months to 16 years, were being neglected by their parents and living in “extremely unsanitary conditions,” Campbell said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they discovered all eight children inside the home, which was infested with insects and rodents, according to the news release. The deputies observed large amounts of trash and feces throughout the residence.

Due to the hazardous environment, the deputies immediately contacted the Iredell County Department of Social Services for assistance.

Detective R. Olson of the Special Victims Unit was assigned to investigate further. During the investigation, Olson determined that the children’s parents, Gregory and Chelsie Smith, had knowingly allowed the children to live in these unsafe conditions, Campbell said.

Deputies also found two dogs inside the home that were not being properly cared for. Iredell County Animal Control responded and took possession of the animals.

As a result of the investigation, Detective Olson obtained arrest warrants for both Gregory and Chelsie Smith.

Gregory and Chelsie Smith were located and arrested on Saturday, June 21, and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. Each parent was charged with seven counts of felony child abuse, eight counts of misdemeanor child abuse, and two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Chelsie Smith was issued a $280,000 secured bond by Magistrate Watkins.

Gregory Smith, who is currently on active probation, received a $282,500 secured bond, also issued by Magistrate Watkins.

The Department of Social Services is continuing its investigation. The children have been placed in the custody of other family members and are currently safe, Campbell said.
