The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has opened a death investigation after human remains were found on residential property on Newton Drive near Statesville.

ICSO detectives were notified on Wednesday that what appeared to be human remains were discovered behind a home at 2336 Newton Drive, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.

When the deputies arrived, they located human remains. The person had been deceased for quite a while, according to the news release.

Detectives secured the scene and called for members of the Crime Scene Investigations Unit to respond and assist with the investigation. 

An autopsy and medical examination is scheduled for later this week, Campbell said.
