Special to IFN
The process for municipal elections in the City of Statesville has been changed, beginning with this fall’s races, following a June 2 vote by the City Council to amend the city charter.
Beginning with the 2025 election, the mayor and members of the Statesville City Council will be elected under a nonpartisan plurality method. Under this method, there will be only one election – no runoff elections will take place. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes for each seat in the November election will be declared the winner.
Additionally, the City Council approved a change to the election cycle for at-large council seats to implement staggered terms.
In the 2025 election only, the at-large candidate receiving the highest number of votes will serve a four-year term, and the at-large candidate receiving the second-highest number of votes will serve a two-year term.
After this election, all at-large council terms will be four years, and the staggered cycle will continue with one at-large seat being up for election every two years.
One benefit of this new election schedule is that every city resident will be able to vote in each municipal election – either for an at-large council seat, a ward representative, or the mayor – helping to keep all voters engaged in every election cycle.
2025 Races
The following positions will appear on the November 4 ballot:
♦ Mayor;
♦ At-Large City Council members (2 seats); and
♦ City Council members representing Wards 2, 3, and 5
Candidate filing for these offices opens on July 7 and closes at 12 noon p.m. on July 18.
