A Statesville man faces felony assault and robbery charges in connection with in incident in which two people were severely injured on Old Charlotte Road earlier this week.

The Statesville Police Department announced the arrest of 39-year-old Detrick Dontay Hamilton in a news release Friday.
SPD officers responded to a reported assault in the 1000 block of Old Charlotte Road on Tuesday, May 6.
Officers located two victims who stated they had been walking along Old Charlotte Road when they were approached by two unknown individuals, according to the news release. The suspects then demanded the victims’ cell phones before physically assaulting both victims, police said.
One victim’s cellphone was taken during the robbery, while the other victim was able to retain their phone. The suspects fled north on Old Charlotte Road.
Both victims were transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital for treatment. One victim sustained a fractured jaw. The second victim required surgery for injuries to their nose and eye and was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The SPD Violent Crime Unit responded to the scene and launched an investigation, which led to the identification of Hamilton as one of the suspects.
Warrants were issued for Hamilton’s arrest on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy and misdemeanor assault on a female.
Investigators located Hamilton near the Fifth Street Ministries. Surveillance units observed him entering a vehicle, and police executed a traffic stop at Old Charlotte Road and Power Street.
Hamilton was taken into custody without incident. He was brought before a magistrate and received no bond due to the severity of the charges.
