The Troutman Police Department is investigating an early morning crash on Old Murdock Road that left two people critically injured.

Police officers, Troutman Fire & Rescue personnel and Iredell County EMS responded to the site of the crash about 3:37 a.m. Tuesday, according to a TPD news release.

Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that the vehicle was traveling at an excessive speed on Old Murdock Road toward N. Main Street when the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a power pole and a large tree, Police Chief Josh Watson said.

Both the driver, Summer Atlas, 19, of Troutman and a passenger, Elysia Simmons, 20, of Statesville suffered critical injuries, Watson said.

Simmons had to be extricated from the vehicle by Troutman Fire & Rescue personnel.

Atlas and Simmons were transported to regional trauma centers due to the severity of their injuries, police said.

The investigation is being conducted by a TPD traffic crash reconstructionist.
