Community Conversations will host a virtual #IAmLeandro discussion on Tuesday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m., continuing local and statewide efforts to raise awareness and engage the community around public education in North Carolina. The session is free and open to the public.
The event builds on an initial Community Conversation held on February 22 in Statesville, where more than 40 community members and leaders gathered for a presentation, interdisciplinary panel discussion, and community dialogue.
Part II will focus on practical next steps, beginning with a brief review of Leandro v. NC and the Leandro Plan in light of the recent N.C. Supreme Court decision. Participants will explore how school funding impacts students, educators, and communities, and learn practical ways to engage using the #IAmLeandro toolkit to support ongoing learning, storytelling, and community engagement.
“While the recent ruling marks a shift, one principle remains unchanged: Every child in North Carolina has a constitutional right to the opportunity for a sound, basic education,” said Rebecca Trammel, founder of Community Conversations and creator of the #IAmLeandro campaign. “This next session is about building on the momentum that began in Statesville to provide the community with information, connection, and space to stay engaged. The people of North Carolina have the opportunity to meet this moment with renewed resolve and a courageous hope to deliver on the promise of a sound basic education for every child.”
