The Town of Mooresville will host its fourth annual Creek Week March 9-14. The Town’s Stormwater Division will be working with various town departments, as well as local businesses, organizations, and agencies, to offer a week full of fun, engaging events for kids, teens, and adults.
Creek Week is a community-focused celebration aimed at protecting and appreciating the area’s local waterways. This event raises awareness about how everyday actions affect Mooresville’s creeks and streams while offering residents hands-on opportunities to make a positive impact. Through cleanups, educational activities, and outdoor events, participants can help improve water quality, learn more about the local watershed, and strengthen their connection to the community.
What to expect
Creek Week events include tours of the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment plant, guided hikes at Mooresville parks and other locations within the areas, trivia at a local brewery, citizen science activities using iNaturalist, activities at the Mooresville Public Library, and a meet-and-greet opportunity with Zippy, Creek Week’s mascot.
Creek Week culminates Saturday, March 14, at Cornelius Road Park (247 Cornelius Road). From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the community can experience a stream cleanup and litter sweep, opportunities to “touch-a-truck” with town vehicles and equipment, technical workshops, educational activity booths, and volunteer opportunities.
Also on Saturday, Creek Week will host a Community Clean-up, an opportunity for residents to drop off unwanted household items and recycle electronics for free. Town Sanitation staff will be onsite to collect unwanted items. TVs, computers, filing cabinets, and similar items can be dropped off. Note: Hazardous chemicals, paints, and tires will not be accepted.
“We have added more events this year to continue our goal of educating the community on the importance of preserving our water resources,” said Ryan Dapkus, stormwater program specialist. “We hope to appeal to as many residents as possible and educate in a fun and rewarding way.”
