Veteran Jorge Gonzalez-Lopez, Apprentice Lineman II at EnergyUnited, is building a career through the cooperative’s participation in the GI Bill apprenticeship program.

Special to IFN

EnergyUnited is investing in a strong workforce and honoring those who have served by participating in the federal GI Bill program. Through this program, eligible U.S. veterans can receive education and training benefits while gaining hands-on experience through apprenticeships and on-the-job training.

Through approved GI Bill apprenticeship programs, veterans can earn excellent wages, industry-recognized credentials and financial support that helps ease the transition from military service to civilian careers.

Currently, EnergyUnited has one apprentice, Jorge Gonzalez-Lopez, actively utilizing GI Bill benefits, with the potential for an additional veteran apprentice to join the program in the future.

To support veterans in our community, EnergyUnited has three designated School Certifying Officials within its Human Resources team, all of whom are authorized signatories for the GI Bill program. SCOs are responsible for certifying veteran enrollment and training so participants can receive their GI Bill benefits.

“Participating in the GI Bill program allows EnergyUnited to invest in skilled, motivated individuals while honoring those who have served our country,” said Thomas Golden, chief executive officer of EnergyUnited. “This program strengthens our workforce, supports long-term career development and creates meaningful opportunities for veterans.”

The GI Bill apprenticeship model benefits both veterans and employers. Veterans gain hands-on experience, lower training costs and a clear path to stable careers. At the same time, employers benefit by attracting disciplined, reliable talent while reducing overall training expenses. Participation also supports workforce development and reinforces EnergyUnited’s commitment to being a veteran-friendly employer.

Through its involvement in the GI Bill apprenticeship program, EnergyUnited continues to invest in people, building strong career pipelines and supporting veterans. It’s all part of the cooperative’s continued commitment to building a brighter future for members and communities.
