One person was killed and a second seriously injured Tuesday morning when a tanker truck exploded outside the Carolina Beverage Group facility in Mooresville. Mooresville Fire-Rescue units, along with Mooresville Police Department and Iredell County EMS personnel, responded to a report of an explosion at 110 Barley Park Lane about 7:16 a.m.

Mooresville Ladder 6 was first on scene, and personnel observed a tanker truck with its side blown out. Mooresville Fire-Rescue’s Specialized Hazardous Materials Unit arrived. Crews donned protective suits and entered the hot zone, where they confirmed the explosion with an exterior nitrogen tank leaking from the explosion. Crews were able to stop the leak.

One person, whose name was not immediately released, was confirmed deceased at the scene. Another individual who sustained chemical burns was transported to a Charlotte hospital.

The Statesville Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit responded. Fire crews evacuated the building and all employees were sent to a safe area.

Firefighters checked the building and roof area or any chemical contamination and then waited for a company that specials in cleanup from chemical incidents to arrive.

Mooresville Fire-Rescue Chief Shane LaCount was in command of the operation.
